How do you maintain yourself in the midst of the demands of ministry?
Even at its best, pastoral ministry is a demanding profession.  And when conflicts rage in a congregation ... when old solutions don’t work any more ... when you have cared for those in pain and those with questions that don’t have easy answers ... how do you keep your balance in the midst of it all?
Tending the Fire is a process sponsored by the Board of Ministry and the Preachers’ Aid Society of New England.   It is based on Bowen Family Systems Theory as applied to the church. The basic text is Generation to Generation by Edwin Friedman. To learn more check out the brochure or click on the link to the “Tending the Fire” web page of Barbara Lemmel, one of the facilitators. www.tending-the-fire.com

All human organizations -- including the church -- operate as systems of interpersonal relationships.  At their best, these systems draw out the best in their members.  At their worst, these systems become “stuck,” undermining and sabotaging even the most well-established relationships.

As the spouse of the pastoral leader of the church, you can easily get caught in people’s expectations, both positive and negative. Finding your own place in those expectations isn’t easy, but it’s always worthwhile.

Tending the Fire offers the spouse of the pastor perspective and tools to be more centered and more effective.
